U.S. National Security in the Age of AI

Last week, the White House released a memorandum on advancing U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. The memorandum stated that:

"AI has emerged as an era-defining technology and has demonstrated significant and growing relevance to national security … If the United States Government does not act with responsible speed and in partnership with industry, civil society, and academia to make use of AI capabilities in service of the national security mission — and to ensure the safety, security, and trustworthiness of American AI innovation writ large — it risks losing ground to strategic competitors."

At EdgeRunner, we fully agree on the importance of this moment. The U.S. and our allies must remain ahead of our adversaries in developing AI capabilities and responsibly integrating them across our defense systems, software, and processes. Unless we act decisively, we risk losing our edge in the AI race the same as we lost our edge to China in drone development and manufacturing.

EdgeRunner was founded with this mission in mind: to build generative AI for the edge that is safe, secure, and transparent. Our goal is to develop the most domain-specific AI for the warfighter, ensuring the U.S. and its allies maintain a strategic edge. We are committed to responsible AI development, focusing on AI that is open, auditable, and free from bias.

Our focus is on building AI capabilities that can be deployed at the edge–on devices such as laptops, smartphones, and drones–where connectivity may be limited. The need for AI capabilities in GPS and internet-denied environments has become increasingly important in places like Ukraine and requires further development.

We look forward to collaborating with the U.S. government, academia, and industry partners as we advance U.S. national security in the Age of AI.
